Sarah Ruden

Sarah Ruden, an award-winning journalist and poet, was born and raised in rural Ohio and educated at the University of Michigan (B.A), Johns Hopkins (M.F.A., Creative Writing), and Harvard (Ph.D., Classical Philology). She lived and worked in Africa for 10 years, and is now a visiting fellow at Yale Divinity School.

In the March 12, 2009 issue of The New York Review of Books, Garry Wills said of Ruden's recent translation of the AENEID, "Robert Fagles, shortly before his death, set the bar very high for translating [Vergil's] Aeneid. Yet already the scholar-poet Sarah Ruden has soared over the bar.... The translation is alive in every part.... This is the first translation since Dryden's that can be read as a great English poem in itself.” Her translation of the AENEID was published by Yale University Press in 2007. Ms. Ruden's three other highly praised translations of the classics are Petronius’ THE SATYRICON: A New Translation with Topical Commentaries (Hackett, 2000); Aristophanes' LYSISTRATA, Translated, with Notes and Topical Commentaries (Hackett, 2003); and THE HOMERIC HYMNS (Hackett, 2005). She also has published a volume of poems, OTHER PLACES (Waterman, 1995), which won the Central News Agency Literary Award.

Ruden's translation of Apuleius’ THE GOLDEN ASS will be published by Yale University Press in 2011. Her own work, PAUL AMONG THE PEOPLE: The Apostle Re-Interpreted and Re-Imagined in His Own Time, will be published by Pantheon in 2010.
