Gertrude Himmelfarb

Gertrude Himmelfarb (1922-2019) was Professor Emeritus at the Graduate School of the City University of New York, a member of the British Academy, the Royal Historical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her many brilliant books include Poverty and Compassion: The Moral Imagination of the Late Victorians and On Looking Into the Abyss: Untimely Thoughts on Culture and Society.
