Hilton Kramer
Hilton Kramer (1928-2012) was the editor and publisher of The New Criterion, a monthly review of the arts and intellectual life, which he founded with Samuel Lipman in 1982. For many years the chief art critic of the New York Times, he was the author of two volumes of criticism—The Age of the Avant Garde and The Revenge of the Philistines—and of other works, including studies of the art of Milton Avery, Gaston Lachaise, and Richard Lindner. In 2004, he was awarded a National Humanities Medal by President Bush.
