Mark Van Doren

Mark Van Doren (1894-1972) taught literature for nearly forty years at Columbia University, where his students included Thomas Merton, John Berryman, and Allen Ginsberg. He was literary editor of The Nation and president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His book The Liberal Education helped promote the "great books" movement, and his Collected Poems, 1922-1938, won a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1940.
